What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a form of complementary medicine using a holistic and hands-on approach to achieve functional improvement. The treatment focuses on the body as a whole and how different body parts, such as the skeleton, musculature, nervous system and other related systems interact. Osteopaths use a variety of approaches to improve function, including manual therapy (soft tissue massage, mobilisation, stretching and manipulation), exercise programming, lifestyle advice and health education. In Australia, osteopaths are primary healthcare practitioners who complete a minimum accredited university training (5 years, full-time) in anatomy, physiology, pathology, diagnosis and osteopathic techniques. Osteopaths are registered by Australia Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
What to expect from your initial consult:
Upon the initial consultation, your osteopath will take a detailed medical history. Next, a physical examination (range of movement, orthopaedic testing etc.) will be performed to help further formulate a diagnosis. From this, your osteopath will tailor a specific treatment and/or management plan.
Osteopaths are trained to check for signs of serious conditions they cannot treat. In these circumstances, an osteopath will refer you for further investigation.
